What Is Sui? The Sui Blockchain and Its DeFi Apps Explained

Sui is a layer-1 blockchain built by Mysten Labs that uses the Move programming language and an object-based data model to process transactions in parallel, with finality in around half a second. Its mainnet launched on 3 May 2023, and its native token, SUI, pays for gas, secures the network through staking and gives holders a vote on protocol upgrades. This page explains how Sui works and doubles as JewelSwap's directory of the key DeFi apps on Sui.

What is Sui?

Sui was designed by Mysten Labs, a company founded in 2021 by former Meta engineers who had worked on Diem, Meta's abandoned stablecoin project, and on Move, the smart-contract language created for it. Co-founders include chief executive Evan Cheng, Move's creator Sam Blackshear, and cryptographers George Danezis and Kostas Chalkias.

Aptos also descends from the Diem codebase, so the two chains are often grouped together. Sui took Move further from its origins by rebuilding storage around objects rather than accounts. That choice shapes almost everything about how the chain runs, from fees to how quickly transactions finalise.

In DeFi terms, Sui grew fast through 2024 and 2025, peaking at about $2.64B of total value locked in October 2025 on DefiLlama's numbers. It has since fallen to about $529M as of 10 October 2026, so liquidity on Sui today is far thinner than it was a year ago.

How Sui works

  1. Everything is an object. Coins, NFTs, liquidity pools and staking positions are all objects with an owner and a version. On Ethereum, a token balance is an entry in a contract's storage; on Sui, it's an object you hold directly.
  2. Owned objects skip the queue. A transaction that only touches objects owned by one address, such as sending SUI to a friend, can be finalised on a fast path without full consensus ordering.
  3. Shared objects go through consensus. Objects many users touch at once, such as a DEX pool or a lending market, are ordered by Mysticeti, Sui's consensus protocol. Sui's documentation cites an average commit of about 0.5 seconds in benchmarks.
  4. Parallel execution. Because each transaction declares the objects it reads and writes, validators can run unrelated transactions at the same time instead of one after another.
  5. Delegated proof of stake. Validators stake SUI, and holders can delegate to them. The validator set is fixed for each epoch, which lasts about 24 hours. Our guide to Sui validators covers how they are chosen and paid.
  6. A storage fund. Users pay a storage fee when they create data. That fee goes into a fund whose returns pay validators for storing it, and deleting data refunds part of the fee.

Key DeFi apps on Sui

The directory below links JewelSwap's guide to each major Sui app, grouped by category, with an honest marker for whether JewelSwap integrates with it. JewelSwap's own Sui liquid staking token is covered in JWLSUI dual-token liquid staking.

DEXs

  • Cetus — Sui's largest concentrated-liquidity AMM and the default liquidity venue for many Sui tokens. JewelSwap: Integrated (auto-compounded farms on Cetus pools).
  • Turbos Finance — concentrated-liquidity (CLMM) DEX. JewelSwap: Integrated (auto-compounded NS-SUI and SUI-USDC farms).
  • DeepBook — Sui's native on-chain central limit order book and the DEEP token. JewelSwap: Partial (a DEEP-SUI farm on a Cetus pool, not trading on DeepBook itself).
  • Momentum — concentrated-liquidity DEX with a ve(3,3) model and the MMT token. JewelSwap: Not integrated.
  • FlowX Finance — AMM DEX and swap aggregator. JewelSwap: Not integrated.
  • Aftermath Finance — AMM, swap aggregator, afSUI liquid staking and perps under one roof. JewelSwap: Not integrated.

Lending

  • Scallop — money market for lending and borrowing on Sui, with the SCA token. JewelSwap: Integrated (leveraged yield farms borrow from Scallop).
  • NAVI Protocol — lending market with the NAVX token. JewelSwap: Not integrated.
  • Suilend — lending market behind the SEND token and the SpringSui liquid staking standard. JewelSwap: Not integrated.

Liquid staking

  • Haedal (haSUI) — single-token liquid staking whose haSUI token grows in value against SUI. JewelSwap: Not integrated.
  • Volo (vSUI) — liquid staking protocol issuing vSUI. JewelSwap: Not integrated.

Perps and derivatives

  • Bluefin — perpetual futures exchange that also runs spot pools, with the BLUE token. JewelSwap: Not integrated.
  • Typus Finance — options vaults and perps; much smaller since an October 2025 oracle exploit. JewelSwap: Not integrated.

Infrastructure

  • Walrus — decentralised storage network for large files, coordinated on Sui, with the WAL token. JewelSwap: Not integrated.

Key features

  • Move's asset safety. Move treats tokens as resources that can't be copied or silently dropped, which rules out some classes of bugs common in other languages.
  • Sub-second finality. Shared-object transactions settle in roughly half a second, and owned-object transfers can be faster still.
  • Programmable transaction blocks. One Sui transaction can chain many steps, such as swap, deposit and stake, and either all of them succeed or none do.
  • zkLogin. Users can create a Sui address from a familiar web login, which lowers the barrier for people who have never held a seed phrase.
  • Low, predictable fees. A reference gas price is set each epoch, and the storage fund separates the cost of storing data from the cost of computing.

SUI token

SUI has a hard cap of 10 billion tokens. Only about 5% circulated at mainnet launch, with the rest released on a published schedule, so ongoing unlocks are part of the supply picture. SUI has three jobs: paying gas, staking with validators to secure the network, and voting on issues such as protocol upgrades. Staking returns are explained in our guide on how to stake SUI.

Risks and track record

  • Network halts. Sui mainnet stopped producing checkpoints for about two hours on 21 November 2024 (a congestion-control bug), about six hours on 14 January 2026 (a divergence in validator consensus processing), and in three outages totalling more than 15 hours in late May 2026, linked to the v1.72 release. Sui reported no user funds at risk, but positions can't be managed while the chain is down.
  • App-level exploits. Move doesn't prevent logic errors. Cetus lost about $223M on 22 May 2025 to an overflow bug in a maths library.
  • Validator power. After the Cetus exploit, validators froze about $162M of the attacker's funds, which were then moved to a recovery trust after an on-chain vote passed on 29 May 2025. It helped victims, and it also showed that a supermajority of stake can act on specific addresses.
  • Thinner liquidity. With chain TVL down about 80% from its October 2025 peak, many pools are shallow. Check depth before trading size.

Is Sui integrated with JewelSwap?

Yes. Sui is one of JewelSwap's three chains, alongside MultiversX and Radix. On Sui, JewelSwap offers JWLSUI/SJWLSUI dual-token liquid staking: you mint JWLSUI 1:1 against SUI, then stake it for SJWLSUI, which appreciates as staking rewards accrue. JewelSwap also runs auto-compounded concentrated-liquidity yield farms on Cetus and Turbos pools, leveraged yield farms that borrow from Scallop, and NFT-collateralised lending.

Sui vs other smart-contract chains

Against Ethereum, Sui trades a huge, battle-tested ecosystem for speed: Ethereum blocks come every 12 seconds and full finality takes around two epochs, while Sui finalises in under a second. Ethereum's account model also means more transactions contend for the same state, where Sui's objects let unrelated activity run in parallel.

Against Aptos, its closest relative, the difference is mostly the data model. Both use Move, but Aptos keeps an account-based layout while Sui is built around objects. If you use JewelSwap on more than one chain, our guides to DeFi on MultiversX and JWLXRD on Radix cover the other two.

  • Cetus — Sui's largest CLMM DEX, home to JewelSwap's auto-compounded farms
  • Scallop — the lender behind JewelSwap's leveraged farms
  • Mysticeti — the consensus protocol that orders Sui transactions
  • DeepBook — Sui's native on-chain order book
  • Haedal (haSUI) — a single-token alternative to JWLSUI
  • Walrus — decentralised storage built on Sui

Frequently asked questions

Is Sui safe?

Sui's core design has held up, but it isn't risk-free. The network halted in November 2024, January 2026 and May 2026 without losing user funds, and individual apps such as Cetus have been exploited. Treat each app's contracts as a separate risk from the chain itself.

What is the SUI coin used for?

SUI pays transaction fees, is staked with validators to secure the network, and gives holders a vote on protocol upgrades. Its supply is capped at 10 billion tokens.

Is JewelSwap available on Sui?

Yes. JewelSwap runs JWLSUI/SJWLSUI liquid staking, auto-compounded farms on Cetus and Turbos, leveraged farms that borrow from Scallop, and NFT-collateralised lending on Sui.
