What Is DeepBook? Sui's On-Chain Order Book and DEEP Token

DeepBook is Sui's fully on-chain central limit order book, with the DEEP token for fees, staking and governance. How it works, risks, and its JewelSwap link.

What Is DeepBook? Sui's On-Chain Order Book and DEEP Token

DeepBook is a fully on-chain central limit order book (CLOB) on the Sui blockchain that wallets, DEXs and other apps plug into for shared trading liquidity, with the DEEP token used for fees, staking and governance. It was incubated by Mysten Labs and the Sui Foundation, and it works less like an exchange you visit and more like shared market infrastructure that any Sui app can route orders through.

What is DeepBook?

DeepBook went live on Sui mainnet in July 2023 as the chain's native order book. Unlike most decentralised exchanges, which price trades with a liquidity-pool formula, DeepBook matches buyers and sellers the way a traditional exchange does: traders post bids and asks at specific prices, and orders fill against each other.

The protocol was rebuilt as DeepBook V3 in 2024, and the DEEP token launched alongside it on 14 October 2024. According to Decrypt, more than 100,000 early users received DEEP allocations through "DBClaim" NFTs distributed in March 2024.

A defining design choice is that DeepBook has no official trading front end. The Sui documentation describes it as a building block for wallets, dApps and protocols. Other teams build the interfaces, and every integration adds to the same shared book. In late 2025 the Sui Foundation unveiled DeepBook Margin, which adds leveraged trading and lending pools on top of the same liquidity.

How DeepBook works

  1. Pools hold the order book. Each trading pair is a shared on-chain object called a Pool. All trading functions are public, so any app can call them.
  2. Traders deposit into a BalanceManager. To place limit orders, a trader's funds sit in a BalanceManager object. Orders are matched and settled on-chain, inside a single Sui transaction.
  3. Simple swaps skip the setup. Swap functions accept coins directly and return coins, which is how DEX aggregators route small trades through DeepBook without users ever seeing it.
  4. Fees can be paid in DEEP. Traders pay fees in DEEP or in the token they are selling. Paying in DEEP is cheaper, and governance sets the fee levels.

Because the book is a public order book rather than a pool formula, it behaves differently from the AMMs covered in our guide to decentralised exchanges. There is no impermanent loss for makers, but liquidity depends on market makers actively quoting prices.

Key features

  • Shared liquidity: one order book serves every app built on it, instead of each DEX keeping its own isolated pools.
  • On-chain matching: orders are matched and settled on Sui, with no off-chain matching engine to trust.
  • Staking discounts and rebates: DEEP stakers can cut taker fees by up to half and earn rebates on maker volume, according to the Sui docs.
  • Flash loans: vaults, routers and arbitrage bots can borrow from DeepBook and repay within the same transaction.
  • DeepBook Margin: leveraged trading drawn from the same liquidity, backed by lending pools for assets such as SUI, USDC, DEEP and WAL.

DEEP token

DEEP has a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens. CoinMarketCap reports that 25% was unlocked at launch, with the rest released over seven years. DEEP has three main uses: paying trading fees at a discount, staking for lower fees and maker rebates, and voting on protocol parameters such as fee rates. Its value is therefore tied to how much trading flows through DeepBook.

Risks and track record

  • Smart-contract risk: DeepBook has a published audit and we found no exploit of the protocol itself as of October 2026. Newer modules like margin and lending still add code that has less history behind it.
  • Liquidity risk: an order book is only as deep as its market makers. DefiLlama shows DeepBook TVL at about $14.0 million in October 2026, down from roughly $20.4 million a year earlier, so large orders on thin pairs can move the price.
  • Margin and oracle risk: leveraged positions can be liquidated quickly in volatile markets, and lenders depend on those liquidations working.
  • Token dilution: DEEP unlocks continue for years, which can weigh on the token used for fee discounts and governance.

Is DeepBook integrated with JewelSwap?

Partly. JewelSwap does not trade on DeepBook directly, but it runs an auto-compounded DEEP-SUI yield farm on a Cetus CLMM pool, so users can farm the DEEP token without managing a position themselves.

The farm sits on Cetus, Sui's largest concentrated-liquidity DEX, not on the DeepBook order book. If you are new to range-based liquidity, our explainer on concentrated liquidity (CLMM) covers how these pools work. You can read more about the wider product set in JewelSwap on Sui and how rewards are reinvested in our guide to auto-compounding.

DeepBook vs other Sui apps

Most Sui DEXs are AMMs. Cetus, Turbos Finance and Momentum all use concentrated-liquidity pools, where liquidity providers deposit tokens into price ranges. DeepBook instead matches limit orders, which suits active traders and market makers rather than passive LPs.

Bluefin also runs an order book for its perpetual futures, but matches orders off-chain and settles them on Sui. DeepBook keeps matching on-chain. For a side-by-side view of volumes, fees and designs, see our Sui DEX comparison for 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is DeepBook safe?

DeepBook has a published audit and we found no exploit of the protocol itself as of October 2026. Like any DeFi protocol it still carries smart-contract, liquidity and, for margin users, liquidation risk, so size positions accordingly.

What is the DEEP token used for?

DEEP is used to pay DeepBook trading fees at a discount, to stake for lower taker fees and maker rebates, and to vote on protocol parameters such as fee rates. Its maximum supply is 10 billion tokens.

Is DeepBook integrated with JewelSwap?

Partly. JewelSwap does not trade on DeepBook directly, but it runs an auto-compounded DEEP-SUI yield farm on a Cetus CLMM pool so users can farm the DEEP token.
