Portal Bridge (Wormhole) Explained: How to Bridge to Sui

Portal Bridge explained: how Wormhole guardians and VAAs work, routes to Sui (and why not MultiversX), step-by-step bridging, fees, the 2022 exploit and alternatives.

Portal Bridge (Wormhole) Explained: How to Bridge to Sui

Portal Bridge is the token-transfer app built on Wormhole, a cross-chain messaging network secured by 19 validators called guardians; to bridge to Sui with it, you connect a source wallet and a Sui wallet at portalbridge.com, pick the token, send, and claim on Sui if the transfer is not relayed for you. As of October 2026, Portal lists more than 30 chains, including Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum and Sui. It does not reach MultiversX.

JewelSwap does not operate on Solana and has no Solana product. It runs on Sui, MultiversX and Radix. Solana appears below only as a chain people bridge away from.

What is Portal Bridge?

Wormhole is a protocol for passing messages between blockchains. Portal is the consumer app on top of it: a website where you move tokens from one chain to another without writing code. When people say "the Wormhole bridge", they usually mean Portal.

Under the hood, Portal can use several transfer methods. The classic one is Wormhole's token bridge, which Wormhole's documentation now calls Wrapped Token Transfers. It locks your tokens on the source chain and mints a wrapped copy on the destination. For USDC, Wormhole can also use Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), which burns USDC on one chain and mints native USDC on the other. If you are new to the concept, start with what a crypto bridge is.

How Wormhole works: guardians and VAAs

Blockchains cannot read each other directly, so Wormhole uses a group of observers to vouch for what happened on one chain to another.

  1. You lock tokens in Wormhole's contract on the source chain. The contract publishes a message describing the transfer.
  2. Wormhole's 19 guardians, independent node operators, each watch that chain. Once the transaction is final on the source chain, each guardian signs the message.
  3. When at least 13 of the 19 have signed, the signatures are bundled into a VAA (Verifiable Action Approval). In effect it is a 13-of-19 multisig attestation that the transfer happened.
  4. The VAA is submitted to Wormhole's contract on the destination chain, which checks the signatures and mints or releases the tokens. You can submit it yourself (a manual transfer) or let a relayer do it (an automatic transfer).

This design means you are trusting that a two-thirds majority of guardians stays honest and that the contracts on both chains verify signatures correctly. The 2022 exploit, covered below, was a failure of the second.

Supported routes to Sui and MultiversX

Sui: supported

Portal lists Sui among its chains as of October 2026, and Sui's own documentation names Portal as a bridging option. Tokens bridged through the token-bridge route arrive on Sui as Wormhole-wrapped coins. They are different coins from native assets such as native USDC on Sui, and some Sui apps list only the native version. Check what a destination app accepts before you bridge.

Circle supports Sui in CCTP, so a native USDC route to Sui exists in principle. Whether Portal offers it for your particular chain pair is shown in the app's route selection; if it does not, the alternatives below can deliver native USDC.

MultiversX: not supported

Wormhole does not list MultiversX, so Portal cannot take you there. MultiversX has its own official bridge, which connects only to Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain. Our Solana to MultiversX guide explains the realistic paths, including one that uses Portal to reach Ethereum first.

How to bridge to Sui with Portal: step by step

  1. Set up a Sui wallet. Install Slush or another wallet from our Sui wallets guide. Phantom ended Sui support on 24 September 2026, so it can no longer be your Sui wallet.
  2. Open Portal. Type portalbridge.com yourself instead of clicking a link from search ads or social media, where fake bridge sites are common.
  3. Connect both wallets. Choose your source chain and connect that wallet, then choose Sui as the destination and connect your Sui wallet.
  4. Pick the token and amount. Portal shows the available routes. Note whether you will receive a wrapped or native token, whether the route is automatic or manual, the fees and the estimated time.
  5. Approve and send. Sign on the source chain. Start with a small test amount the first time.
  6. Claim on Sui if needed. On a manual route, return when the VAA is ready and sign the redeem transaction on Sui. This costs a little SUI.
  7. Verify. Check your Sui address on Suiscan and confirm the coin type you received.

Fees and transfer time

Fees. On a manual token-bridge transfer you pay network gas on the source chain and again on the destination chain to claim. Wormhole's own documentation lists small amounts of gas on both chains as a prerequisite. Automatic routes add a relayer fee, so you can skip the claim. Some routes also offer "gas drop-off", where the relayer converts part of your transfer into destination gas so you arrive with a little SUI. For relayed CCTP USDC transfers, Wormhole's documentation, updated September 2026, quotes relay fees of about 4.2 USDC from Ethereum mainnet and about 0.3 USDC from Base, Optimism, Arbitrum and Avalanche, charged at cost.

Time. Guardians sign only after the transfer is final on the source chain, so speed depends mostly on where you start. Solana reaches full finality in about 12.8 seconds, according to its documentation in October 2026. Ethereum takes far longer, typically around a quarter of an hour. Add a short wait for guardian signing and the destination transaction.

Security record

On 2 February 2022, an attacker exploited a flaw in Wormhole's Solana contract. The contract failed to validate a system account used in signature verification, which let the attacker forge a guardian approval and mint 120,000 wrapped ETH with nothing behind it. Estimates of the loss range from about $320 million to $338 million depending on the ETH price used. The attacker redeemed most of it for real ETH on Ethereum. Jump Crypto, Wormhole's backer at the time, replaced the full 120,000 ETH, so wrapped-ETH holders were made whole.

A fix for the bug had reportedly been committed to Wormhole's public code repository but not yet deployed when the attack happened. The lesson for users is general: a bridge concentrates a lot of value in a few contracts, and a single verification bug can drain it. Our guide on how to check a DeFi protocol is safe covers what to look at before trusting any bridge.

Alternatives to Portal for Sui

  • Sui Bridge: the native bridge, run by Sui's own validators. It connects Sui to Ethereum only, and Sui's documentation lists ETH, WETH, WBTC, LBTC and USDT as supported. It caps flows at $16 million per 24 hours from Ethereum to Sui and $7 million in the other direction.
  • Mayan: a cross-chain swap protocol that supports Solana, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum and Sui, among others. Its Swift route settles in seconds, its MCTP route uses CCTP for stablecoins, and its Wormhole Swap route uses Wormhole's token bridge.
  • Allbridge Core: moves USDC through CCTP and USDT and USDe through LayerZero, so you receive canonical stablecoins. It lists Solana, Sui and several EVM chains.
  • ZetaChain: listed in Sui's documentation as another way to move BTC, ETH and ERC-20 tokens to Sui.
  • An exchange: deposit on one chain, withdraw on Sui. It is custodial but often simplest.

What to do on Sui after bridging

Once your assets are on Sui, the JewelSwap Sui app offers JWLSUI and SJWLSUI liquid staking, auto-compounded farms on Cetus and Turbos pools, leveraged farms that borrow from Scallop, and NFT-collateralised lending. Our overview of the best DeFi platforms on Sui covers the wider ecosystem.

Risks and common mistakes

  • Receiving the wrong version of a token. Wormhole-wrapped USDC is not native USDC. Swapping between them later costs money.
  • Forgetting to claim. Manual transfers wait until you redeem on the destination chain. Funds are not lost, just pending.
  • No destination gas. Without SUI you cannot claim or move tokens. Use gas drop-off or bring some SUI.
  • Fake bridge sites. Bookmark the real URL and never enter a recovery phrase into a website. See wallet drainers and approval phishing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Portal Bridge the same as Wormhole?

Portal is the user-facing app; Wormhole is the messaging protocol and guardian network underneath it. Using Portal means trusting Wormhole's guardians and contracts.

Is Portal Bridge safe?

No bridge is risk-free. Wormhole requires 13 of 19 guardians to sign each transfer, but it lost 120,000 wrapped ETH in a February 2022 contract exploit, later replaced by Jump Crypto. Bridge only what you need and test with a small amount first.

Can I bridge to MultiversX with Portal?

No. Wormhole does not list MultiversX as of October 2026. MultiversX's official bridge connects to Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, so you would bridge to Ethereum first and then use the MultiversX bridge.

Why did my tokens arrive as a different token on Sui?

Wormhole's token bridge mints a wrapped version of the original token on Sui. It is backed by the tokens locked on the source chain, but it is a separate coin from any native version, such as native USDC on Sui.
