What Is xExchange? MultiversX DEX, MEX and XMEX Explained

xExchange is the original DEX on MultiversX, built by the core team. How swaps, MEX, xMEX and Energy work, the risks, and JewelSwap's xExchange farms and JWLXMEX.

What Is xExchange? MultiversX DEX, MEX and XMEX Explained

xExchange is the original decentralised exchange (DEX) of the MultiversX blockchain, built by the MultiversX core team, where users swap tokens, provide liquidity and lock MEX as xMEX to earn boosted rewards. It launched as Maiar Exchange in November 2021, still holds the most DEX liquidity on MultiversX, and JewelSwap runs boosted farms on its pools.

What is xExchange?

xExchange is the DEX that grew up alongside MultiversX. DefiLlama describes it as an AMM built by the same team that built the MultiversX blockchain, and the MEX token was created on-chain in November 2021, when the exchange went live as Maiar Exchange. When Elrond rebranded to MultiversX at its X-Day event in Paris in November 2022, Maiar Exchange became xExchange.

A month later, on 10 December 2022, xExchange shipped "MEX 2.0" after a community governance vote. The update cut MEX inflation by 65% and introduced two ideas that still define the exchange: Energy and xMEX, a locked version of MEX. xExchange calls MEX "the fully community-owned token" behind the protocol.

In late October 2026, DefiLlama put xExchange's TVL at about $3.9 million, more than any other MultiversX DEX, though far below the peak above $2 billion it recorded in late 2021. For a wider map of the network, see our guide to the best DeFi protocols on MultiversX.

How xExchange works

  1. Constant-product pools. Each pool holds two tokens and prices trades with the classic x × y = k formula explained in our AMM guide.
  2. A 0.3% swap fee, split three ways. According to xExchange's docs, 0.2% goes to liquidity providers, 0.05% buys back and burns MEX through the EGLD/MEX pool, and 0.05% is shared among accounts that hold Energy.
  3. Farms pay in xMEX. LPs can stake their LP tokens in farms. Farm rewards are paid in xMEX, which is locked for four years by default and cannot be traded or sent.
  4. Energy boosts rewards. Energy is the amount of xMEX multiplied by how long it stays locked, so 1 xMEX locked for the full four years gives 1 Energy point. Energy falls as the unlock date gets closer. More Energy means a larger boosted share of farm and staking rewards, a cut of protocol fees and more governance power.
  5. Early unlocks cost a penalty. Holders can shorten a lock or redeem xMEX for MEX early, but they pay a penalty for doing so.

Key features

  • Deepest MultiversX DEX liquidity: EGLD and most major MultiversX tokens trade first on xExchange.
  • Energy system: a single score from locked MEX drives farm boosts, fee sharing and voting power.
  • Buy-back and burn: part of every swap fee buys MEX and burns it.
  • On-chain governance: MEX and Energy holders vote on protocol changes and listing policy.
  • Open-source contracts: the xExchange smart contracts are public in the MultiversX GitHub repository, which other protocols, JewelSwap included, build on.

MEX token

MEX is xExchange's governance and incentive token. The MultiversX explorer showed a supply of about 3.98 trillion MEX in October 2026 and a market capitalisation of around $2.4 million, so each MEX is worth a tiny fraction of a cent. Most of its utility comes through xMEX: locking MEX creates Energy, and Energy earns boosted rewards, fee share and votes. Because xMEX is locked and non-transferable, holders give up liquidity in exchange for those benefits.

Risks and track record

  • Smart-contract and admin risk: we found no exploit of xExchange itself, but we also found no public third-party audit report. The open-source contracts include admin pause functions, so individual pools can be paused.
  • Network risk: in September 2026 MultiversX halted block production for about five days, from around 19 to 24 September, after an attempted VM-level atomicity exploit. MultiversX's status page listed xExchange as degraded during the response.
  • Lock risk: xMEX rewards are locked for up to four years and early unlocks carry a penalty, so farm rewards are not instantly liquid.
  • Liquidity and market risk: TVL is a small fraction of its 2021 peak, MEX has a very large supply, and LPs face impermanent loss.

Is xExchange integrated with JewelSwap?

Yes. JewelSwap runs farms on xExchange pools and issues JWLXMEX, a liquid token backed by locked xMEX.

JewelSwap's xExchange farms are boosted farms: JewelSwap holds a large xMEX position, so a deposit can reach a boosted share of rewards without the depositor locking any MEX. Because xExchange pays farm rewards in xMEX, which cannot be transferred, JewelSwap mints JWLXMEX backed by the newly earned xMEX and credits it to farmers. As our JewelSwap tokens guide explains, JWLXMEX is an unredeemable derivative: it cannot be redeemed one-for-one for its backing, but it can be staked on JewelSwap or swapped at market rates.

The farms are part of the wider JewelSwap product set covered in JewelSwap on MultiversX. A boost does not remove market risk: impermanent loss and the price of the reward token still apply.

xExchange vs other MultiversX apps

AshSwap is the network's stableswap DEX, with lower fees for like-valued assets and its own DEX aggregator. OneDex is a smaller, permissionless DEX where anyone can list a pool. Hatom is not a DEX but the main lending market on MultiversX. xExchange remains the default venue for EGLD liquidity.

  • MultiversX: the sharded Layer 1 behind the whole directory.
  • AshSwap: stableswap DEX with veASH governance and JewelSwap farms.
  • Hatom: lending, sEGLD liquid staking and the HTM token.
  • OneDex: permissionless DEX with DCA and the ONE token.

Frequently asked questions

Is xExchange safe?

We found no exploit of xExchange itself as of October 2026, and its contracts are open source, but we found no public third-party audit report. Users also face network risk, as shown by the MultiversX halt in September 2026, plus impermanent loss and locked xMEX rewards.

What is the difference between MEX and xMEX?

MEX is the freely tradable xExchange token. xMEX is MEX locked for a period of up to four years; it cannot be traded or sent, but it generates Energy, which boosts farm rewards and gives fee share and voting power.

Is xExchange integrated with JewelSwap?

Yes. JewelSwap runs boosted farms on xExchange pools and issues JWLXMEX, an unredeemable token backed by the xMEX that its farms earn, which can be staked on JewelSwap or swapped at market rates.
