NGMI stands for "not gonna make it", crypto slang for a decision or project headed for failure. What it means, how it's used, and NGMI vs WAGMI.

NGMI stands for "not gonna make it", a crypto slang phrase used to say that a person, decision or project is headed for failure. It is the pessimistic twin of WAGMI and shows up mostly on social media, often as a joke, sometimes as a genuine warning.
NGMI is an acronym for "not gonna make it". In crypto culture, "making it" loosely means reaching financial freedom through holding, trading or building. Calling something NGMI says the opposite: this person or project will not get there.
The phrase spread on crypto social media during the 2021 bull market, in the same circles that popularised WAGMI ("we're all gonna make it"). The two are used as a pair: WAGMI for the in-group, NGMI for whoever is doing something the group disapproves of.
NGMI is rarely literal. It can be a friendly roast, self-deprecation ("sold at the bottom again, I'm NGMI") or a pointed criticism of a project's design.
NGMI works as social shorthand. The most common uses:
It sits in the same slang family as HODL, FOMO, rekt and DYOR.
Hypothetical: say you bought 1,000 tokens at 1.00 USD and the price falls to 0.60 USD. You sell to stop the bleeding and lock in a 400 USD loss. A week later the token is back at 0.90 USD, and the project's chat calls everyone who sold NGMI.
Does that make the sale a mistake? Not necessarily. Run the numbers from the point of decision. At 0.60 USD you had 600 USD at risk. If you had a rule to cut any position that fell 40%, you followed it. The rebound to 0.90 USD is one outcome; the token could just as easily have gone to 0.20 USD, turning a 400 USD loss into an 800 USD loss. Judging a decision by one outcome that happened afterwards is hindsight bias, and NGMI replies are built on it.
The reverse is also true. Holding because you were afraid of being called NGMI is not a strategy. Rules set in advance, like the ones in our crypto risk management rules, are a better guide than a reply thread.
NGMI is banter, but it can push people into bad decisions:
NGMI stands for "not gonna make it". It is crypto slang for a person, decision or project that the speaker thinks will fail, often used as a joke or a roast.
WAGMI ("we're all gonna make it") is optimistic and inclusive. NGMI ("not gonna make it") is pessimistic and usually aimed at someone else's decision. Both are social shorthand, not analysis.
Not by itself. NGMI is usually a reaction to a single outcome, such as selling before a rebound. What matters is whether your decision followed a plan you set in advance and whether your position sizes let you survive being wrong.
